Merak Sakteng Trek is to discover the unique semi-nomadic lifestyle, culture, and traditions in one of the most scenic pastoral valleys of Sakteng. The region is located in the protected area of Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in Trashigang District in eastern Bhutan. Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary protects the easternmost temperate forest ecosystems of Bhutan. The protected area has endemic species like eastern blue pine, black-rumped magpie and many others found only in the east. Trek to Merak and Sakteng was opened for trekking only from 2012 after three decades of inception of tourism in Bhutan so very few trekkers have trekked in this region. The trek is moderate passing along semi-nomadic villages of Gengu, Merak, Sakteng, Thakthi and Joenkhar.
Besides trekking in Bhutan, go for cultural sightseeing at the colorful Paro, the capital – Thimphu, the old capital – Punakha including the hike to the Taktsang Monastery ‘Tiger’s Nest’ located outskirts of Paro town.
