ITENERARY

The 11 Nights 12 Days Bhutan Tour starts with a flight into Paro on our national carrier, Druk Air, is a befitting introduction to the spectacular beauty of our country. In clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks give way to the lush green Paro valley as you land. The first gift from Bhutan will be the cool, clean fresh air as you step out of the plane. After clearing customs and visa control you are met by your guide and transferred to your hotel to settle in. Your Bhutanese escort will greet you on arrival, and then drive you the short distance to hotel. Paro is a picturesque valley with quaint clusters of hamlets amid terraced paddy fields. Although the site of the nation’s first airport Paro still retains tradition by way of architecture and farming.After lunch depart to Thimphu, the modern capital of Bhutan. The drive will take around 1½ hour. Thimphu has a population of about 98,000. The town is made up of just three lines of shops and is the only capital in the world without traffic lights. In the evening visit the Handicrafts Emporium, which has all types of Bhutanese handicrafts for sale. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

In the morning visit the National Memorial Chorten, built in honor of our late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk; and also visit National Institute of Traditional Medicine; the Art & Craft School, where children still learn the ancient art of Buddhist painting. Also visit the Folk Heritage Museum, which is dedicated to connecting people to the Bhutanese rural past through exhibition of items and artifacts used in rural households, Textile Museum, where the art of traditional weaving is still kept alive and preserved through exhibition and has a good collection of old textiles which are rich in its color and design. Lunch served at a restaurant in Thimphu. After lunch visit the Handmade Paper Factory, Tashichho Dzong, Zilukha Nunnery, Motithang Mini-Zoo (home of the bizarre takin, the national animal), & Dechenphodrang Monastic School. After breakfast depart to Punakha, an ancient capital of Bhutan enjoying 11 Nights 12 Days Bhutan Tour. Leaving Thimphu the road climbs steeply through a forest of pine and cedar, festooned with hanging lichen high up near Dochula pass (3,050 m). This pass often offers panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain ranges. After stopping for tea and the view, we descend along a series of hairpin bends to the fertile valley of Punakha and drive to your hotel for lunch and check in. After lunch visit Punakha Dzong, winter seat of the Je Khenpo and the Monk Body, remarkably located between the rivers of the Mo (Female) Chu and Pho (Male) Chu. If time permits take a hike to Khamsum Yueley Chorten (45 minutes one way) through the terraced rice fields and over looking the village to kabina. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Today we start early for the fabulous drive to the central valleys of Bhutan. The drive to Bumthang via Trongsa is approximately 7 hours crossing over Pele La pass (3,300 m) and Yotongla pass (3,400 m). “The Central Road”, across the Black Mountains, was completed 30 years ago, and it brought about great changes to the people in central Bhutan. We pass Wangdue, one of the major towns and district headquarters of Western Bhutan where we make a short stop to view the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong dramatically located on the spur of a hill at the confluence of the Tsang Chu and Dang Chu rivers. We then climb steadily passing through semi-tropical vegetation and then to Pelela Pass (3,300 m) with an alpine environment of rhododendrons and dwarf bamboo. This pass is traditionally considered the boundary between West and East Bhutan. If the weather is clear the Himalayan ranges can be seen, particularly the peak of Jhomulhari (7,314 m) to the west. En route we cross Chendebji Chorten built many centuries ago to suppress a demon. In Trongsa we visit the impressive Trongsa Dzong, ancestral home of the ruling dynasty. In olden days the dzong commanded the passage between East and West Bhutan. We then drive to Bumthang valley (described as “ one of the most beautiful spot in the Himalayas” across the Yotongla pass (3,400 m). 11 Nights 12 Days Bhutan Tour offers you one of the most spectacular valleys in Bhutan and also the heartland of Buddhism. Here many great teachers meditated and left in their wake many sacred grounds. The Guru and his lineage of Tertons (treasure finders), have led to the sprouting of many temples in the valley. In the morning we hike to visit Tamshing Monastery (one of the oldest monastic schools built by Terton Pema Lingpa) and Kurjey Lhakhang (where the Guru Rinpoche subdued a local demon and left his body imprint on a rock). We also visit Jambay Lhakhang (one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in 7th century) and Jakar Dzong (seat of the district administration). In the afternoon drive towards east of Bumthang valley to visit Membar Tsho (burning lake) where Pema Lingpa found some Dharma and then visit Swiss Cheese farm where you can taste the cheese along with some cider juices and wines produced locally. Today we continue our 11 Nights 12 Days Bhutan Tour by visiting Trongsa and Wangdue. After an early breakfast drive to Wangdue via Trongsa. The drive to Wangdue over the Pelela pass. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Morning join in the celebrations of the King’s birthday and late afternoon drive to Gangtey which lies on the flanks of the Black Mountains. There is an old monastery of Gangtey Gompa (under renovation) dating back to the 17th century. A few kilometers past the Gompa on the valley floor are the fascinating valley of Phobjikha. The gentle sloping hillsides of Phobjikha is described as “the most beautiful valley in the Himalayas”. This is the winter home of black-necked cranes that migrate from the arid plains in the north to pass winter in milder and lower climate. Evening take a walk around the beautiful valley of Gangtey which lies at an altitude of 3,000 m. After visiting the old monastery and the valley drive further down into the valley and Dinner and overnight at hotel.
In the morning witness the Black Necked Crane Festival where you will be able to witness the dances of Black Necked Cranes by the school children and there will be also some folk dances by the local community. It is the opportunity to immerse with local people and then drive to Thimphu with a walk to Chhimi Lhakhang Monastery enroute and then drive to Thimphu over the Dochola-pass. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
After breakfast drive towards the north of Thimphu valley and you will be able to get the glimpses of Dechhenchholing palace amid the forest of pine trees. We continue our drive further on till we reach at the base of Tango Monastery. From here we hike for 2 hours to reach the top and visit the tango Monastery which was founded in the 13th century. After visiting the monastery we walk back at the ground floor and drive to Thimphu for lunch. After lunch take a drive to Sangaygang to get the view of Thimphu valley. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
After breakfast drive to Paro and visit Paro Ta dzong, an ancient watch tower, which now houses the National Museum. This dzong was converted into the National Museum in 1968. The museum boasts antique thangka, textiles, weapons and armour, household objects and rich assortment of natural and historic artifacts.We also visit the Rinpung Dzong, built in 17th century to defend the valley against Tibetan invaders. The dzong is now used as an administration centre and school for monks. Evening ends with a walk through Paro’s main shopping district. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
Enjoy the 11 Nights 12 Days Bhutan Tour by driving the winding road to the Drukgyal Dzong, the ruined fort, which was once defended this valley from Tibetan invasions. Mount Jhomolhari, the sacred summit, reaches skyward beyond the dzong. This can be viewed on a clear day. We stop at Satsam Chorten to hike up to the Taktsang monastery (Tiger’s nest). The horse ride up to the cafeteria will take around one and half hour. At the viewpoint enjoy the stunning view of the monastery, where Guru Padmasambhava landed on the back of a tigeress in the 8th century. After lunch at the café walk back to the road point where your car will pick you up and then drive to visit Drukgyal Dzong, the ruined fort, which was once defended this valley from Tibetan invasions.
